Scarlet avens brings vivid shades of yellow and red to borders and rockeries. It will appeal to even most demanding ornamental plants' afficionados with its original habit. This winter resistant, sturdy perennial forms a dense rosette of green, round leaves with a slightly wrinkled surface. Slender, tender, erect stalks (40 - 60 cm tall) sprout from this green bush and end with numerous, semi-double flowers that might remind you of poppies, although they are smaller (5 cm in diameter). This presented species blooms in the hottest period of summer - end of June, in July and August.
Seeds are sown in April and May to a seed bed. Seedlings are transplanted to the ground in August. These plants require permeable, medium fertile, light, yet not overdrying soil. They take on the richest colours in full sun. We recommend to plant them at border backgrounds or rock gardens. Chilean avens, or double bloody mary, as this plant is also know as, can be cultivated for cut flowers.
