Holly leaf miners are small, yellow-black flies who grow circa 2 millimetres long as adults. The species that usually causes gardeners the most problems is the tomato leaf miner (Liriomyza bryoniae) that feeds on tomato, pepper, and related vegetable species. Their name is connected with the traces that their feeding larvae leave on the plants - light spots on the leaves that with time extend into winding, narrow stripes. Larvae create them by eating the parenchyma and moving inside the corridors (called mines) without damaging the upper or bottom surface of the leaf. Several larvae that feed on one leaf can create an intricate pattern that looks like a labyrinth. What happens next? Holly leaf miners propagate and within a short time produce next generations particularly in greenhouses. This leads to dying of more and more leaves that ends with the death of an entire plant.
