The "Gabi" kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea convar. acephala var. gongylodes) is an easily grown universal variety. Due to its relatively short vegetation period it is recommended for cultivation for summer and autumn harvest. Equally rich crops can be achieved in the field and under covers. Its round, quite large stems that are covered by appetizing, light green and thin peel stand out with delicate taste. Therefore it is recommended to eat them right after harvest. The flesh of this variety is resistant to breaking and lignification and stays juicy and delicious for a long time.
Cultivation from seedlings brings best results. Seedlings can be grown even at home in seeding trays or on stillages. Sowing should be planned for early spring in order to be able to transplant the seasoned seedlings to the vegetable bed in April. Like other cabbage vegetables this kohlrabi variety prefers fertile, moist and warm soils, although it is definitely less demanding in that regard in comparison to cabbage or cauliflower. The stems can be harvested from August until October.
