Red valerian (Centranthus ruber) is also known as spur valerian. This extremely attractive plant produces white, light red or scarlet blooms. Their charm and fragrance is highly valued by bees, butterflies and moths. After having sown the kiss-me-quick (another name of the plant) in your garden you will enjoy both the beauty and scent of its flowers and different species of flying insects - you should pay special attention to eyed hawk-moth, a night butterfly from Sphingidae family.
Cultivation of the devil's or Jupiter's beard (this plant really has many names) shoud start in spring. Seeds are sown into a seed bed or boxes. You should bear in mind that the plants germinate rather late and at irregular rate. Young plants are transplanted to the permanent sites in August and September in 40 to 50 cm spacings. Red valerian will bloom in May the following year for a long time, until end of August. In order to fully enjoy the beautiful red valerian inflorescences you should plant them on a sunny or partially shady site in a permeable, moderately dry and calcium soil.
One package contains 0.1 g of red valerian seeds. A growing guide and the sow-by date are printed at the back side of the package.
