Birdhouse Gourd is a very interesting annual plant with long shoots that grow up to 2.5 metres long. This plant grows gourd-shaped flowers with a narrow neck in the upper portion. The shape of the flowers greatly resembles a birdhouse, which makes the plant an appealing ornamental variety, and it can indeed as a birdhouse after it has been prepared for such a purpose. The Bottle Gourd is often grown as an indoor decoration, whereas its fully-developed fruit can be used as adornments by late spring.
Growing: sow the seeds in covered pots (8 to 10 centimetres broad) in April or directly into a permanent position in early May; in latter case, sow the seeds 2 to 3 centimetres deep, 2 to 3 seeds into each position. Grow the plants with stakes in uncovered soil or in foil tunnels in 80-10cm spacings. The plants require warm moist fertile soils in sunny positions that are protected from the wind.
