"Little Gem" romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia) belongs to the earliest lettuce varieties. It does not accumulate nitrates and stands out with high resistance to diseases. It develops compact, elongated, erect heads that grow up to 20 cm tall. Their leaf petioles are wavy, slightly bent inwards. The outer ones are dark green, while the inner ones paler and tenderer in taste. Those leaves are delicious and sweet, crunchy and juicy. Leaves of the "Little Gem" romaine lettuce may be eaten raw, steamed or cooked like spinach. They are intended for direct consumption in salads, garnishing or sandwiches.
Seeds of the romaine lettuce are sown early in spring to hotbeds or directly to the soil. Seedlings are transplanted to the permanent site in May in 30 x 20 cm spacings. Mature heads may be harvested from May to August. Romaine lettuce needs a place on a sunny, warm and wind-sheltered border to grow well. You will achieve best crops in moderately, yet constantly moist soils rich in nutrients and humus.
