Stevia is an annual plant that grows 50 to 80 centimetres in height. It its used as a natural sweetener, as it contains stevioside (10%), a glycoside that is around 20 times sweeter than sugar. It has many advantages over sugar; it has a low-calorie count, does not contain sugar, and is fairly resistant to high temperatures, thanks to which it is perfectly suitable for boiling and cooking. Also, Stevia has antibacterial qualities and can be used by diabetics.
Growing: sow the seeds in pots or in pallet planters from mid-March to early April. Plant out into the soil in the second half of May. The plants can also be cultivated in pots; clip their tips for better growth. This variety prefers fertile permeable soils in sunny positions that are protected from the wind.
