"Covent Garden" annual baby's breath (Gypsophila elegans) is an annual plant that develops small blooms and subtle habit. This variety shows strong growth and reaches 50 - 60 cm in height. Thin, broadly branched stems are sparsely leaved but decorated with myriads of small, white flowers. Light, tender baby's breaths perfectly fit onto borders and flower beds as filling between other summer flowers. They are, however, mostly grown for cut flowers and used in bouquets and flower arrangements, both fresh and dried.
Baby's breath seeds should be sown early in spring under covers or from April to May directly to the borders. Seeds need light to germinate, so you must not cover them with soil. Transplant seedlings to the permanent site in May in 20 x 20 cm spacings. We recommend to grow the "Covent Garden" annual baby's breath between other plants, whose taller stems will offer support, otherwise baby's breaths may need poles or other supports to relay. This species requires plenty of sun and warmth and is resistant to periodical droughts. It grows most abundantly in sandy, permeable soil rich in calcium.
