Brown mustard (Brassica juncea) is an annual plant of the cabbage family. It is a hybrid bred from black and white mustard. Its broadly branching tufts grow from 30 to 150 centimetres tall. They are erect, stiff, and rather dense. Entire plants are covered with a waxy coating that gives them a bluish colour. At the bottom of the stems, quite large, harp-shaped leaves appear. At the upper parts of the shoots the leaves become smaller and entire. Brown mustard flowers are vividly yellow and gathered in umbels. Mustard fruit is a silique that contains small, round seeds with the characteristic, pungent taste.
Sow mustard seeds early in spring directly into the soil. Lower temperature, even frost down to -6°C should not hamper the germination. The first seedlings should appear after five days already. The vegetation period of brown mustard is about 110 days long. This plant thrives in calciferous, humous soils that are either loamy or sand-loamy. Watering is crucial for the cultivation success. Mustard is highly demanding in that regard.
Mustard in form of green fodder or silage is recommended for feeding rabbits and cattle. You can grow it as aftercrop that would wonderfully enrich the soil. This species has phytosanitary properties too - it eliminates many pests and plant diseases. Brown mustard belongs to melliferous plants.
