The "Voorburg Wonder" butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata) is a medium-late variety intended for field cultivation. It develops large, compact, round heads that consist of pale green, crispy and tasty leaves. It retains gustatory value for a long time and develops flowering stalks very late. Butterhead lettuce is a highly nutritional and tasty vegetable that is low calorie at the same time. It is recommended in all kinds of diet programmes as it gives a feeling of satiety and makes digestion easier. It is used in many nutritious salads and as garnish for many dishes. Butterhead lettuce leaves contain calcium, magnesium, iron as well as B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin PP and carotene.
Seeds of the "Voorburg Wonder" lettuce are sown in March to boxes and seeding trays under covers or directly onto the field. Seedlings should be transplanted to the permanent site from April to June in 30 x 30 cm spacings. These variety will yield the richest harvest when grown in fertile, humous, sandy-clay, quickly warming up soils on sunny sites. You may collect the well-developed lettuce heads from May to July.
