"Chabaud" carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) belongs to the most popular garden varieties of the carnation and is valued for its tender blooms that take on a multitude of colours. Broadly branching annual plant grows 40 - 60 cm tall. Relatively thin stems are covered with narrow leaves, giving the plant a dense, tuft habit. Large flowers develop on long, stiff stems in the summer. These large, double inflorescences with frizzled petals come in a variety of light, pleasant colours. Subtle aroma also belongs to the advantages of this plant and therefore we recommend to plant carnations in vicinity of the relaxation spots and under windows. They look great in bouquets that will fill your interiors with colour and delicate scent, too.
Carnation seeds are sown early in spring under covers. The emergence takes place within two weeks in temperatures 16 - 18°C. Young plants need to be pricked out and hardened before transplantation outside. Transfer seedlings to the field in May in 25 x 30 cm spacings. Carnation is a plant that loves sun and warmth and it blooms most beautifully in such conditions. It grows best in a warm, rather heavy, yet permeable soil rich in humus and nutrients.
