Some consider the pink-orange "Newport Pink" Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus) an old-fashioned plant, but its impressive inflorescences are so adorable that they will adorn every garden. This biennial plant grows approximately 50 cm tall to produce stiff flowering stalks ending with flat inflorescences in summer. Each of those consists of myriads of tiny blooms with frizzled edges. "Newport Pink" blooms stun with the unusual salmon-pink colour and typical carnation-aroma. This plant is usually planted on borders, edgings and containers, but may be used as cut flower, too.

Sweet William seeds are sown in late spring to pots or seeding trays at home, or into soil on a seed bed. First seedlings appear after approximately two weeks in temperature maintained within 16-18°C range. Seedlings require double pricking and can be transplanted in 30 x 30 cm spacings to the permanent site, where they will grow and produce blooms, in the following year. They would survive the winter, but it is advised to cover them before the frosts. Sweet William grows well in almost every soil, but prefers sunny sites.
