Dwarf Sweet William "Pinocchio" (Dianthus barbatus), here sold as a selection of varieties with double flowers, perfectly fits lower borders and colourful edgings. Aromatic, multicoloured umbels may also be used as cut flower. This species is a short-lived perennial, usually grown as biennial. This low growing plant reaches maximal height of 30 cm. It blooms all summer long and the sweet-scented inflorescences delight with a multitude of colours, the majority of them being different shades of pink. Flowers may be unicolour or bicolour, it seems impossible to find two identical ones.
Late spring is the best time for sowing Sweet William seeds both under covers and on a seed bed. The emergence takes place after approximately two weeks. The seedlings should be transferred to the permanent site in August. This biennial species only develops a tuft of leaves in the first year and the flowering stalks appear then in the second year. Sweet William may grow in partial shade, but planted on sunny sites it will produce more blooms. It will thrive in almost every kind of soil.
Each package contains 0.5 g of dwarf Sweet William "Pinocchio" seeds of double-flowered cultivars. The package information contains growing instructions and the sow-by date.
