Caucasian pincushion flower got its name from the original region of its growth. It is a shame, that we more often meet this elegant perennial flower plant at the florist's than in a garden. Caucasian scabiosis, as this plant is also called, presents itself wonderfully planted in groups. This presented variety will help you produce white or violet-blue flowers.

Caucasian pincushion flower is bushy plant with erect stems, upon which large, round inflorescences grow. Unbranched shoots form a loose habit. Spiky leaves with small indents add lightness to the plant. The inflorescences themselves are characterized by their original build. Single flowers arranged in circles develop starting with the external ones. Fully developed inflorescence is often compared to, who would have guessed it, a pincushion due to the protruding pistils.

Caucasian pincushion flower grows circa 60 cm tall. Blooming season starts in July and lasts until September. It requires a sunny site with a calcium, humous, permeable soil. In reality the pincushion flower turns out to be more tolerant. It grows on the majority of garden soils. The plant supplied with enough nutrients will sprout long, slender, crawling shoots that would need support. It might not survive in wet and heavy soil, hence covering might be required. In order to produce seedlings of this plant on your own seeds need to be sown end of May / beginning of June. They will be than transplanted to permanent site in September. Removal of withered flowers extends blooming time.

Caucasian pincushion flower is often grown for cut flowers due to the extraordinary longevity of blooms. It may also serve as perennial flower bed plant in the garden, harmonising with the main attractions and creating an interesting addition for them. It will also refresh a rock garden. Properly preserved, it will fit wonderfully in dried bouquets. A tuft of caucasian pincushion flower should find its way into butterfly-lover's garden. It attracts those wonderful creatures.
