Dwarf garden zinnia "Liliputek" (Zinnia elegans) is a long and abundantly blooming annual plant that originates from Mexico. It develops broadly branched stems that grow 20 - 25 cm long and form round habit. Zinnia stems are stiff, brittle and thick and covered with rough hairs. Sessile leaves emerge from them densely. At the stem ends sit extremely decorative flower heads on long pedicels. "Liliputek" is an exceptional zinnia variety. It produces round, double blooms with 4 - 5 cm in diameter. The tongue-shaped ray flowers take on red colour, are stiff and covered with velvety hairs. The disc flowers that make up the flower centres are yellow. The "Liliputek" zinnias are used for edgings, at flower beds and in balcony boxes. Their blooms attract legions of butterflies.
Seeds of the "Liliputek" zinnia are sown in April under covers. The emergence occurs within 2 weeks in temperatures between 16 and 20°C. Transplant seedlings to the permanent site in the second half of May when the plants have developed 3 - 5 pairs of true leaves, keeping 30 x 30 cm spacings between the plants. Soil for zinnia cultures needs to be fertile, permeable, humous and sufficiently moist. These plants require warm, sunny or partially shady, wind-sheltered sites. They look at their best in hot and sunny summers. Blooms appear in June and stay until first autumn frosts.
