Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus) has been known in Europe for centuries. It is known under many different names, including cicerchia, blue sweet pea, chickling pea, chickling vetch, Indian pea, white pea, or white vetch. Its seeds are used as food, fodder, and in production of casein. High nutritional value of grass pea bases on high content of proteins that consist of beneficial amino acids and substantial amounts of minerals. Seeds of this plant can be used similarly to pea seeds. They perfectly complement soups, fillings, salads, pâtes, and stews. Grass pea proteins are also used to enrich some products. Thanks to the dietary fibre and energy-boosting compounds, grass pea belongs to nutritious plants that give a feeling of satiety for a long time.

Grass pea seeds should be sown very early in spring, preferably between 15 March and 8 April, in rows 12 to 15 centimetres or even 20 to 25 centimetres apart. Sow four to eight centimetres deep depending on the compactness of the soil - shallow in heavier souls and deeper in lighter ones. Seedlings tolerated frost well and the plants are resistant to periodical drought during the entire vegetation period. This species prefers lighter, sandy soils and cannot stand too moist, acidic earth. Cereals are considered the best forecrop for grass pea. Do not grow this plant after legumes and other plants that leave the soil rich in nitrogen. The harvest takes place when the most pods have already browned and the seeds are hard. Grass pea pods do not break, what significantly facilitates harvesting.
