Maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides) is a perennial plant that would be perfect for rock gardens, since it thrives in dry and sunny spots. This plant spreads broadly, developing long, crawling shoots that form dense green carpets. In summer they are decorated with myriads of tiny, yet very charming white-red flowers. During other months tufts of the green leaves constitute the main ornament. Due to its compact size this species would be ideal for planting on border, path and wall edgings, as well as in containers.
Maiden pink seeds should be sown in spring to boxes or to seeding trays. Please remember to maintain stable soil humidity and temperature of 15 - 18°C and the seeds will germinate in no time. Transfer the seedlings to the permanent site at the end of summer, where they will bloom the following year. This plant grows best and blooms abundantly when planted on sunny and dry sites. Maiden pinks planted in partial shade will produce a limited number of flowers. They like permeable soils with alkaline or neutral reaction.
