Rock Soapwort - Saponaria ocymoides - Airy grace for every garden corner - Fresh Seeds

Rock soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides) is a charming, low growing perennial that can transform small spaces with its soft, romantic look. It forms dense, spreading mounds that cover the ground like a floral carpet, sprinkled with many small flowers in gentle shades of pink. Growing to around 15 cm tall, it is an excellent ground cover plant with a long, generous flowering period. It is well suited to rock gardens, sunny beds, walls, and pots, where its shoots can spill over the edge and create attractive cascades.

Sowing depth

Sow the seeds shallowly, at about 0.3 cm deep. Light coverage and steady moisture support even emergence and healthy growth. With the soil kept lightly moist, the first seedlings should appear quickly.

Sowing time under cover

The best time to sow is from April to May. Sow under cover in a cold frame or in containers placed in a warm, bright spot. In these conditions, germination is reliable and the young plants grow strong, ready to be moved to their final position in the second half of summer.

Planting time

Move seedlings to their final position in August or September, once they have branched well and developed several pairs of true leaves. This helps them establish faster and show their full potential in the following season.

Spacing

Space plants 20 x 30 cm apart. This gives them room to spread and form compact, colourful cushions. Correct spacing helps create an even, impressive carpet of flowers.

Flowering time

Rock soapwort flowers abundantly from May to July. During this period, small five petalled blooms cover the plant, creating a light, airy cloud of colour. The shades are delicate, but the sheer number of flowers makes the effect highly decorative.

Growing

This is an easy plant to grow and very rewarding. It does best in sunny positions, in free draining soil that is moderately dry. It tolerates drought and frost well. It looks excellent in rock gardens, along the edges of beds, and in containers where the trailing stems can fall naturally. It is a good choice if you want a natural, flowering display without intensive care.
