Cowpea "Splendor" (Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis) is a plant producing stringless pods that grow up to 60 cm long. It is mostly found in amateur cultivation. This annual dwarf plant grows 40 cm tall and develops dense, erect bushes. Under right conditions it will branch out sideways, what positively affects blooming and volume of the crops. It produces self-pollinating blooms and 60-cm-long, thin pods that are harvested in unripe, green state. They are valued for their unusual looks and the excellent taste. They are flexible and stringless. Their original taste comes from the high sugar content. Cowpea tastes even better than French beans and slightly resembles snow pea in flavour. This vegetable is also superior to beans when it comes to the nutrients content, particularly calcium, iron, vitamin C and beta-carotene. Cowpea pods may be eaten raw, boiled, fried, marinated, dried and frozen.
This tropical plant is extremely thermophilic and sensitive to low temperatures. It shows, however, high resistance to drought and high temperatures. Grow cowpea in fertlie, permeable, sandy soils. Neutral or slightly acidic soil reaction suits it best. Under Central European weather conditions we recommend to cultivate cowpea under covers. Sow seeds in May in 60 x 80 cm spacings. Harvest the pods gradually as they appear, when they are still young, firm and compact. The harvest takes place 60 - 70 days after the cultivation start and lasts until first frosts.
