Cucumber "Gergana" (Cucumis sativus) belongs to coveted early varieties and produces long fruit that are fitted for preserves and direct, raw consumption. Strong, tall "Gergena" plants show great productivity. The fruit harvested of them are cylindrical, even with delicate rippling, yet smooth skin without warts. These sweetish, tenderly tasting cucumbers show no hint of bitterness, hence they are perfect for salads. The longest fruit grow 28 - 33 cm long, but the smaller, not fully developed ones may be pickled.
Cultivation of this prolific, resistant variety starts with growing seedlings at home (in early spring) or on a seed bed (end of May). Young plants are transferred to aerated borders in th open air, or to a tunnel into loosened, fertile and moist soil. Salad cucumbers require soil rich in organic matter that does not overdry - in such conditions they produce long, large, juicy fruit of the highest quality. "Gergana" crops may be harvested from August to September.
