Scarlet Sweet William "Scarlet Beauty" (Dianthus barbatus) is a plant valued for its intense colouring and beautiful scent of the blooms. These easy in cultivation, traditional biennial plants grow 50 cm tall on average. "Scarlet Beauty" is an unique variety that stands out with vividly red flower clusters. Fiery red inflorescences consisting of large numbers of blooms with frizzled edges form a nice contrast with the bluish-green foliage. Impressive inflorescences will dazzle with their beauty all summer long. Strong, rich aroma, typical for pinks and carnations, belongs to the advantages of this plant. It is fitted for cut flowers, from which you may compose durable, fragranced bouquets. Presented cultivar will also grow well in containers, on borders and in rock gardens. Sweet Williams look great planted in larger groupings or alongside paths and walls.
Sweet William seeds are sown in late spring or early summer. You may sow directly outside or into containers in an unheated room. Cover them with a thin layer of light soil and remember to water them regularly. Seeds germinate in temperature within 16-18°C range after 2-3 weeks. End of summer, when the seedlings reach considerable size, they are transplanted to the site where they will grow. Leave 30 cm spacings between the plants. Sweet William will thrive in almost every kind of soil, although it prefers slightly basic, rich and well drained soil. It will grow equally well in the sun and partial shade.
