This species is sensitive to frosts and therefore it is mostly cultivated from seeds sown in spring under covers. Fully developed seedlings are transplanted to the soil in the second half of May, after the risk of spring frosts has passed. At that time you may also sow seeds directly to the ground. Choose a sunny and wind-sheltered site for cultivation of edible amaranth. This plant prefers warm and deeply cultivated soils that are rich in nutrients, yet rather dry. It handles periodical water shortages well.
