Leaf chicory is a valuable vegetable, worth having on your vegetable bed. It is very decorative and easy to grow, as it does not require forcing, nor blanching of the heads. It is a valuable ingredient of salads, but can be served baked or stewed. The subtly bitter taste goes well with many dishes. It constitutes a valuable source of many vitamins and minerals. It positively influences the cardiovascular system, supports digestion processes and improves the work of organs associated with it.
Chicory cultivation requires careful site preparation. This plant prefers composted, fertile, moist areas. It can be either grown from direct sow or planted from seedlings. Sow in the second half of June to a seedbed or seeding trays. The seedlings are transplanted to the ground in mid-July. Seedlings growing in the ground need to be thinned, leaving 30 x 25 cm spacings between them. Vegetation period is about 2 months long. Then, then heads are cut and the outer leaves are removed. Freshly cut chicory stays fresh and retains good quality for about 2 weeks stored in the refrigerator.
One package contains 0.2 g seeds of the leaf chicory variety mix. Growing tips and the sow-by date were printed on the package.
