Pea is a rather inconspicuous plant that ranks high among those earliest grown by mankind. The round seeds known all around the world are popular but deserve much more credit. From all the varieties available on the market we recommend the heirloom pea "Zazrak of Kelvedon".

Pisum sativum, how the pea is scientifically called, is a one year, medium-tall (up to 60 cm) broadly branching out shrub. The edible parts of this plant are elongated green pods that develop already in June. The pods that contain a few seeds are harvested as they develop. Depending on the time of harvest the peas can be used as unripe green, sugar peas or, when fully developed, dried, for long storing. Cooked, unripe green peas can be used in salads, in vegetable soups or exquisite cream soups. Peas in that form can be frozen separately or in a vegetable mix. Preserved, canned peas can be found in most pantries across Europe.

Well developed, vividly bright green and quite ornamental leaves might form nice partnerships within a flowery garden. Pea flowers themselves can be white, yellow, pink or red. In order for the pea plants to bear rich harvest, they should be sown on a partially shady site. It should be sown early (March - April). This variety is resistant to colds and the optimal growing temperature lays between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. It likes humidity, but moderation in watering is recommended.

Pea "Zazrak of Kelvedon" not only allows us to cook tasty meals, but also to refill nutrient deficiencies. No matter if we choose to eat it green, or dried, we receive a hearty portion of B-group vitamins, as well as vitamin K and the "youth potion" of vitamins A, C and E. With all those vitamins come such nutrients like magnesium, kalium, calcium, iron and folic acid. Large amount of fibre prevents us from intestine diseases, lowers cholesterene and sugar levels and the blood pressure itself. Low glycemic index (GI) makes it a must in diet of all people suffering from type 2 diabetes. Peas will deacidify the body and can be used as hydrating and anti-inflammation costmetic.
