White consumer mustard (Sinapis alba) is an oily plant that mostly finds culinary and medicinal uses. This is the most commonly grown mustard species in Central Europe. White mustard is grown not only for its seeds, used in oil and seasoning production, but also for the green mass, used as fodder and green fertilizer. This plant also limits the population of beet cyst eelworm in the soil and is a valuable melliferous plant.
White consumer mustard is an annual plant with a short vegetation period. It is resistant to periodic frosts, but sensitive to drought. Sufficient water supply is especially important in the blooming and seed development stage. White mustard should be grown on sunny sites. It thrives in clay and sandy-clay soils that are rich in calcium. Acidic and waterlogged soils would not become this plant. Early spring sow in the last decade of March or the first decade of April brings the richest harvest, however, when growing white mustard for green forage one should wait with the sow until middle of August, when days are shorter and the plant produces more green mass.
