The Złoty Łan (Golden Field) camomile is a Polish variety of an annual decorative and medicinal plant. These 50 to 60 centimetres tall bushes represent the Aster family. Branching stems are densely covered with tripinnate or bipinnate long narrow leaves. Flower heads consist of yellow disc florets and a collar of outer white subtle petals. Camomile grows in the wild across the entire world. It can be commonly spotted on fields, roadsides, wastelands, and lawns. This plant has been used in medicine for various ailments for centuries.
Camomile seeds should be sown onto the field from mid-August to September or in early spring. Do not cover the seeds with soil, but only press them gently inside. Germination starts within a week or two. We recommend to grow camomile 25 x 30 cm apart. You can also broadcast seeds loosely in the garden, e.g. to provide vegetables with a natural protection against pests. Camomile (alternate spelling: chamomile) prefers sunny sites, yet its roots should be at least partially covered. It succeeds in average soils with an admixture of humous. It tolerates a wide range of soil reaction. Watering is recommended only during extended drought periods.
It is the young camomile flowers that are used in herbal medicine. They are used to prepare teas, infusions, balms, rinses, and compresses. They owe their medicinal properties to a high concentration of biologically active substances, among which the essential oils, flavonoids, coumarin, phenol acids, and mucilaginous polysaccharides deserve at least a honourable mention. This rather modest flowering plant has a real superpower inside. The list of beneficial properties of chamomile is long. The most important include anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetes, diastolic, antibacterial, antifungal, soothing, skin-regenerating properties. Camomile can also help cure infections of the respiratory and urinal tract. Apart from the herbal medicine, camomile constitutes an important component of shampoo and creams. White-yellow camomile flowers are edible and can be used to decorate dishes and add extra floral flavour to them. In gardening, camomile is a valued part of parallel cultures, as it improves the resistance of neighbouring plants and can be used to prepare organic, eco-friendly plant control agents. A strong camomile infusion is a great natural treatment for bulbs and seeds.
