Commelina is a comparatively rare, yet very interesting perennial plant. In temperate climates, this exceptional variety is mostly grown as an annual. In a period from July to late autumn, it produces lovely blue flowers that grow out of its 40 centimetre-long straight rigid shoots. Moreover, the flowers close in the evening, which is a feature very characteristic of this particular variety. Commelina is a superb choice for perennial beds, or it can be used as a cut flower.
Growing: sow the seeds in planter boxes or small pots from March to April. The seeds germinate in 14 to 20 days at 18-25oC. Plant out into the soil in late May, or when there is no risk of frost. This variety prefers fairly moist infertile soils.
