The "Grandpa Ott's" common morning glory (Ipomea purpurea) is a very attractive and quickly growing annual creeper that develops curling shoots reaching up to 3 m in height. The plant climbs on the supports, wrapping its runners around them. Large, heart-shaped, hairy leaves that form a thick green cover and large (3 - 6 cm in diameter) trumpet shaped, crimson blooms with a characteristic red star inside constitute the biggest assets of this plant. Flowers grow from leaf corners on long pedicels, 2 to 4 on each. They emerge in June and stay on the plants until autumn. Another feature of the morning glory is that its blooms only open in the morning, evening and on cloudy days. This creeper is perfect for covering gazebos, walls, pergolas, grates, fences and balcony railings.
Seeds of the "Grandpa Ott's" morning glory are sown directly to the ground in April-May, 0.5 cm deep in 20 - 30 cm spacings. These plants require plenty of sun and a fertile, permeable and moderately moist soil. The plants need large amounts of nutrients, hence we recommend to nourish them with compost or special flowering plants' fertilizer.
