"Gala" corn salad (Valerianella locusta) is an annual plant whose wild varieties may be spotted in Central Europe in natural environment. It belongs to the earliest varieties and is characterized by rich harvest. Due to high resistance to frost it may be grown all year long, harvested even from autumn to spring. Edible and used in the kitchen are the compact rosettes of shovel-shaped leaves. Smooth, tender leaf blades take on dark green colour. They are valued for their sweet, slightly nutty taste and aroma. The melting on the tongue corn salad leaves may be served fresh, raw as salad or sandwich component and they also taste great in different greens mixes.

Seeds of the corn salad may be sown directly to the soil almost all year long apart from a few winter months. corn salad should be cultivated in rows 15-20 cm apart. Thin the seedlings after the emergence so they grow 5-8 cm apart. After 2-3 months the harvest can begin. corn salad is a very easily cultivated plant that is undemanding in regard to the site, too. Humous, calciferous and constantly, moderately moist soils suit it best.
