Hosta is a lovely perennial plant; it grows 25 to 40 centimetres in height and is cultivated mainly for its one-of-a-kind foliage. Its leaves assume various shapes and hues – ovate, lance-shaped or heart-shaped; yellow, light-green to creamy. The funnel-shaped, white or lavender flowers that form clusters appear in the summer. Hosta is most suitable for rockeries, planters and flower beds and is also used for flanking small streams.
Growing: sow the seeds under cover from March to May. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. To start germinating, the seeds require to be grown in evenly moist soil at 20-22ºC. The seeds germinate in 3 to 5 weeks at 16-20ºC. Prick the seedlings out into pots or into pallet planters. When the seedling have developed 5 to 6 pairs of leaves, plant them out into a permanent position in 30-35cm spacings. This variety prefers moist fertile permeable soils in sunny or semi-shaded positions. The plants do not tolerate droughts; they like fertilising.
