Marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa) is a short-lived perennial that is usually grown as an annual. The plants develop an erect habit and branch out broadly. They grow 50 – 70 cm tall. The bell-shaped flowers appear in the middle of summer and bloom until autumn. They open early in the afternoon and wilt in the morning the day after. These short-lived blooms enchant with intriguing, mixed or striped colouring. They come in many different bright colours and smell pleasantly. Four o'clock clover, as it is also called, looks best in larger groupings either on borders or on flower beds. You may grow it in containers that adorn balconies and terraces or plant it in greenhouses and conservatories.

Marvel of Peru seedlings should be planted in spring after the last frosts have gone. These plants will thrive in permeable soil rich in nutrients. The soil also needs to be light, yet retain steady amount of water. Marvel of Peru prefers wind-sheltered, warm and sunny sites. These plants do not winter in the ground. Excavate the tubers before the autumn frosts and store just like dahlias in an airy room where temperature does not drop below 0°C.
