Meadow foxtail is a grass of high economic importance. It is intended for hay meadows with high pasture value. It is considered a loose tuft grass that develops stolons. Its stems are densely leaved and tall. This grass develops a shallow root system. It is extremely resistant to frost and survives last spring frosts well. It retains green colour during the mild winters. It tolerates the long lasting ice cover. It has high soil requirements. It grows best in a fertile, rich, permeable soil, whose humidity is essential for the successful cultivation. The meadow foxtail tolerates waterlogging and periodical floods, too. These properties are considered one of the most important properties of the presented species. Therefore it can be grown on sites with the ever swinging conditions that are out of reach for other plants. This grass species is recommended for hay meadows, but is not advised for pastures due to its high sensitivity to treading. It brings rich yield of high nutritional value. Particularly the young plants delight with their nutritional content, taste and digestibility. The interest in the meadow foxtail has been constantly growing in the recent years, as this plant makes good use of sewage and organic fertilizers, such as animal manure.
