"Melissa" bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) belongs to late French bean varieties that is characterized by the purple colour of pods. The plant develops extremely long shoots that need supports upon that they would climb. Large advantage of the pole varieties lays in the rich crops that you may collect from small cultivation area. This variety is perfect for small home gardens. The long pods that may reach up to 30 cm in length look appetizing thanks to their unusual purple colour. They are delicious, tender and fleshy and additionally stringless, and taste great with melted butter. They constitute a great side dish to many different meals.
Bean is a thermophilic plant, hence its seeds may only be sown onto the field in May, when the soil is sufficiently warm and the risk of spring frosts has passed. Seeds of the pole bean are often sown 2 - 3 per hole, in 60 - 90 cm spacings. Harvest of the "Melissa" bean pods takes place between July and September. The site for bean cultivation should be sunny and wind-sheltered. The soil should quickly warm up in the spring and contain large amounts of nutrients and humus.
