The showy stonecrop, most commonly called simply stonecrop (Sedum spectabile) is a long-lived, sturdy, and hardy perennial that flowers at the end of summer and beginning of autumn. It survives heat and water shortages very well. Both the flowers and leaves of this charming, vigorous plant have ornamental properties. The flowers take on bright pink colour. They are tiny yet form exceptionally ornamental, dense umbels that measure every 20 centimetres in diameter. Large, thick, egg-shaped leaves with serrated edges can be found underneath the flowers. They grow on the entire length of the plant and beautifully extend the appearance of the plant. Their intriguing, greyish leaves are covered with a waxy coating.

The about 50 centimetres tall stonecrop forms rounded, broad, dense tufts. This perennial allows to cover a larger area in a naturalistic or rock garden. It fits on borders too. The late flowering period, spanning from August to October, proves to be an asset in a multi-species group. Showy stonecrops attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators to the garden. It is an easy-to-grow species that is weather-resistant and long blooming. It likes dry, lime, loose soils, even though it would also thrive in compacter humous soil. It should grow on sunny sites.
