The 'Kanon' field pea produces wrinkled seeds and is considered a unique very early variety. Fresh seeds harvested from the tall plants of this vegetable are large, green and stand out with the exceptionally high sugar concentration. The compact growth form of the plants proves to be extremely convenient in cultivation. The numerous pods contain 7 to 8 seeds each. You can expect the yield circa 72 days after the sow.
The field pea requires a sandy-loam, permeable, aerated and quickly warming up soil. The soil should have regulated air-water conditions and contain enough humus and lime. Pea requires moderate air and soil humidity in order to thrive. The appropriate water supply is therefore of utmost importance. The flowering period and the time of pod and seed development are crucial. Pea is sensitive to acidic soil. Too dry, sandy and to wet soils are not recommended for pea cultures.
Field pea seeds should be sown from March to mid-April. The plants are not sensitive to low temperatures and germinate usually after about 10 days. Pea should be grown in rows 15 to 20 cm apart. Sow 5 to 6 cm deep. The distance between plants should reach 5 cm.
Pea is a valuable vegetable. It contains valuable A, C, E and K vitamins as well as selection of B vitamins. It is also rich in elements. Zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron are considered the most important ones. Pea is used in deacidifying diet and recommended for people suffering from diabetes due to its low glycaemic index. It has proven anticancer properties.
