Cucumber "Dar" (Cucumis sativus) is a dwarf, Polish-bred cultivar that produces medium large (8 - 10 cm long), cylindrical fruit with tender taste. It takes a bushy, compact habit and a rather small size - 20 cm tall and 50 cm wide. The fruit do not get bitter, hence they are fitted for preparation of salads and sandwiches. Tender, not to thick peel allows you to eat "Dar" cucumbers whole, without peeling. They can also be marinated and pickled. This plant blooms abundantly with intensely yellow flowers, what makes it an ornamental plant, too.
Bushy cucumber "Dar" belongs to vegetables with lowest calorie content (20 kcal per 100 g). Water constitutes 97% of its mass, while the rest consists of protein, fats, sugars, vitamins C, B1, B2, E and A, as well as such minerals as kalium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. High basic minerals content result in deacidifying effects of the cucumber.
Bushy cucumber "Dar" may be grown from direct sow to the ground or from seedlings. Seeds are sown on the field from mid-May until beginning of August. Place 1 - 2 seeds per hole in 20 - 25 cm spacings. In order to prepare seedlings, point-sow single seeds from mid-April to peat pots. Seedlings are transplanted to the ground in the second half of May or at the beginning of June. Seeds germinate after 5 - 10 days. The cultivation site should be sunny and warm, while the soil fertile, moderately moist with neutral reaction and enriched with compost. We recommend to use standard garden soil in container cultivation. Cucumbers are harvested from July to August.
