The bicolour caladium, also called elephant ear, "Candidum" (Caladium bicolor) is a perennial plant producing ornamental leaves, that is commonly grown as a pot or greenhouse plant. Plants of this species reach heights of circa 40 cm. The heart-shaped, elongated leaves sit atop long petioles and delight with the exceptional colouring. The "Candidum" variety sports almost white leaves decorated with dark green netting. This foliage constitutes the main decorative feature of the plant, because its blooms are small and rather inconspicuous. This magnificent plant perfectly suits different arrangements at home, in a conservatory or in a terrarium.

Caladium tubers are planted into pots at the end of winter already. These plants like bright spots, but should not be grown in full exposure to sunlight. They thrive in shade. They prefer warm sites, where temperature does not drop under 12°C. The soil should be well drained and rich in humus. Elephant ears require constant humidity in the soil, so do take care of regular watering. Limit the amount of water in autumn, dig out the tubers in winter and store in a warm, airy and humid place.
