Garden dahlia "Mignon" (Dahlia pinnata Mignon) belongs to the popular and valued dwarf dahlias. It is grown as annual plant. Large, single flowers with large centres and broad, tear-shaped petals constitute the largest asset of this plant. They can take on a variety of colours, from white, through sunny shades of yellow, tender and distinct tones of pink and orange, to deep red. Average height of the erect stalks that end with blooms reaches from 30 to 50 cm. Garden dahlia requires fertile, permeable and moist soil, although it will also develop well on lesser, compost-enriched soil. This plant loves the sun, but partial shade will do it no harm.
Seeds of this charming variety should be sown onto a hotbed or at home, into an indoor greenhouse from end of February until beginning of April. Strong seedlings with true leaves are planted in the second half of May. Small tufts of lush, intensely coloured flowers look great on mixed borders and larger groupings on lawns. You may also plant them in ornamental pots and grow for cut flowers.
