Corn salad (Valerianella locusta) is an annual plant with edible, oval leaves that form low (10 - 20 cm tall) rosettes. It is fitted for cultivation in garden or in container on a balcony or at home. Corn salad is a lettuce-like vegetable with a tender, nutty flavour. You may add its leaves to salads in which it harmonises with citrus fruit. Corn salad is low-calorie and at the same time rich in provitamin A and vitamin C. Therefore it should be consumed in large amounts by people with higher demand for these substances. It is also a rich source of kalium, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron.

Corn salad belongs to plants both undemanding in terms of soil and with short vegetation period. You may grow it in garden in spring, as the first vegetable crop in the season, or in atumn as aftercrop. Corn salad is also fitted for cultivation in containers at home. For that purpose you should sow its seeds from April to September to pots filled with standard garden soil. Seeds are sown 2 per hole. Place the pots in a sunny or partially shade place. You should regularly water these plants during the whole cultivation. You will be able to harvest corn salad leaves from June to November.
