Japanese Thistle is a perennial plant, which is also grown as an annual; it grows 70 to 90 centimetres in height. This is a mix of Japanese Thistle varieties that produce beautiful creamish-white or red flowers that develop on thin stems. The stems also produce fairly sharp, sword-shaped leaves that present a great decorative potential. Flowering in the summer, the plant is recommended to be grown on its own in small clusters or in perennial beds.
Growing: sow the seeds under cover from mid-March to mid-April. The seeds germinate in 14 to 20 days at 16-20oC. Plant out into a permanent position in 40-60cm spacings in May. The plants require moist light humus soils in sunny positions. Five to eight grams of seeds produce around one thousand plants.
