The 'Romesa' oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus) is an annual plant that belongs to the cabbage family. This species has been previously grown for the seeds that were used in production of oil, that has similar properties to rapeseed oil, and as bird fodder. Currently it is also commonly grown as after crop for green forage or green fertilizer that enriches and improves the phytosanitary condition of the soil. This plant is also grown as fore crop in potato and beet cultures. One of the advantages that growing of oilseed radish brings is elimination or at least reduction of the sugar beet eelworm population in the soil. The 'Romesa' variety stands out with quick initial growth when it develops a tall branched stem and abundant foliage. Therefore it supplies high amounts of green mass for production of silage.
Oilseed radish can quickly adjust to various growing conditions. It handles temperature drops down to - 6°C well, it tolerates minimal rainfall at the initial growth stage and can even survive short term drought. It requires deeply cultivated, moderately moist soil that is rich in nutrients. Oilseed radish seeds can be sown early in spring, but the 'Romesa' variety tolerates sowing later in the season. The seeding norm in after crop cultures is 25 to 30 kg per ha.
