The 'Borus' red beetroot is a highly productive variety that produces roots of excellent quality. This beetroot develops round, relatively large roots. The resistance to cercospora leaf spot of beets and shooting flowering stalks belongs to its most important advantages. Roots of this variety do not tend to accumulate nitrates. The inside part of the root is deep red, compact and firm. This variety produces small leaf rosettes that sprout from the central upper part of the root.
It is a multi-purpose variety that can be directly processed and eaten in soups, salads and as a side dish. It can made into delicious juice, pickles and other preserves. It can also be frozen. Round roots of the 'Borus' beetroot can be stored long term and will supply you with tasty flesh during autumn and winter.
Red beetroot seeds should be sown early in spring, at the beginning of April. These plants will be harvested early. Beetroots grown from May are usually grown for the ongoing consumption in summer and autumn. Those seeded in June will bring excellent yield for winter storage. Sow the beetroots rather shallow, 1 to 3 cm, preferably in rows 30 - 40 cm apart. The vegetation period of the 'Borus' beetroot lasts about 110 days.
Beetroots should be sown into the moderately moist soils that are rich in nutrients. This vegetable is sensitive to acidity of soil. It should be cultivated in earth with neutral reaction. It also requires sunny sites. It will not bring the desired yield when grown in shade and too densely. Beetroots tolerate the majority of soil types, hence will thrive in most gardens. They cannot stand waterlogged, acidic and predominantly sandy sites.
