Sorrel belongs to plants commonly known on almost every continent. It grows naturally in the temperate climate of the northern hemisphere. It is widespread in our region and in some countries it is considered a weed. It usually inhabits fields, roadside green strips and city lawns. We encourage you to purchase seeds of this plant that will definitely diversify your daily diet.

Common sorrel is a perennial plant, of which leaves are the usable, edible part. They form an irregular rosette. Leaf blades that grow on long stems are leathery, elongated and arrow-shaped. Greenish, later becoming purplish spike inflorescence sprout from rippled stalks that are typical for this species. Single flowers are tiny and appear in summer. We recommend to remove them in order to stimulate forming of new, tender leaves and protect the larger ones from becoming pithy. Sorrel plants grown for a few years develop deep, broad root system. You may than divide them into smaller plants.

Seeds purchased in our store have to be sown directly from April until August. Harvest time depends on the sowing time. You will be able to harvest the plants sown in spring after approximately twelve weeks. Sunny sites suit common sorrel best, are not however, the sine-qua-non condition. The soil needs to be fertile, permeable and moist, as such ground will yield juicy leaves. Thinning, weeding and regular watering are the most important care measures in sorrel cultivation.

Thinking of sorrel automatically brings soup to one's mind. Served with a hard boiled egg it invigorates us with its sour taste especially on hot days. This is by far not the only way to use the arrow-shaped foliage. They will constitute a refreshing addition to salads and give a roast stuffing a unique taste. Green sorrel sauce is a great supplement to fish. Preserved in jars with seasoning it will provide ready ideas for a quick and healthy lunch.

Nutrients that can be found in the sorrel are easily assimilable by human body. Therefore it is still used in medicine. Dried leaves infused with boiling water will help us in kidney and liver diseases. This infusion, applied externally, will speed up healing of wounds and ulcerations of skin. Do not forget about the cleaning effect on silverware, wickerwork and bed cloths. It will also remove stains caused by ink, rust and mould.

You should remember that sorrel contains oxalic acid that might lead to forming of calcium oxalate precipitates. Reasonable, moderate consumption of this plant is recommended to all people that are prone to formation of kidney stones. Excess consumption of sorrel might also lead to decalcification of bones. Therefore you should add sour cream or milk to sorrel dishes.

Sorrel seeds will not harm your budget. Easy cultivation and reliable harvest promote this plant on their own. Sorrel sown on a vegetable bed will become a great alternative for the obvious, daily menu.

The quality control process

All our seeds must pass a four-stage quality control process.

Stage one begins with a careful selection of the suppliers. Than we proceed with controlling their crops, foreign producers are not excluded from the quality control process. Plants are checked at every stage of their development: when they start to grow, during blooming and when they start bearing fruit (seeds). At this stage the most important thing is to ensure proper spacing of the plants. Thanks to that obtaining the desired morphological characteristics of each particular species or variety, such as colour, height and shape, can be ensured.

Stage two consists of a detailed verification tests in laboratory conditions. With the use of the highest quality equipment by the highly qualified staff, our suppliers perform more than 30 000 quality checks annually. The seeds that do not meet our requirements are subject to technological refining processes, including drying, cleaning, upgrading and testing again.

Stage three starts with sowing seeds in selected control plots. That way we obtain valuable, exact information concerning their germination that must be maintained at an appropriate level. Simultaneously, the varietal identity of each species is checked at this stage.

Stage four takes place in our warehouses and consists of eliminating seeds that have been stored for too long on our shelves and replacing them with new batches. Each package is stamped with a unique batch number and also with the sow-by-date.

All four stages combined allow us to state with confidence that the seeds we deliver comply with the highest standards and have completed all required control stages with flying colours.
