The Arkus winter garlic (Allium sativum) is a valuable, wintering variety that is intended for planting in autumn. It belongs to early harvested varieties as it ripens only a week later than the Harnas variety. Arkus is a variety that readily produces flower stalks. Its round flower heads end with air bulbils. The plants develop medium long erect leaves covered with bluish waxy coating. It develops round bulbs that weigh 50 to 60 grams on average. They are covered with white-purplish or greyish, visibly veined skin. It covers 4 to 7 cloves enclosed in purple-brown scales. The bulbs constitute a valuable material for the pharmaceutical industry. They are also perfectly suited for consumption right after the harvest and for processing, as addition to sauces, preserves, meat and vegetable dishes.
Europe offers excellent conditions for growing garlic, but this spice may be grown virtually all over the world. The variety offered here prefers sandy-loam, permeable, yet sufficiently moist soils, preferably with a pH of about 6.8. Plant the cloves in autumn in order to harvest the bulbs at the end of June already. The long storage life belongs to the most important features of this variety, whose bulbs remain edible for a long time.
Each package contains 16 bulb (0,8 - 1,0 kg) of the Arkus winter garlic bulbs sized about 4 cm.
