Gourd family vegetables find more and more interest among consumers and pattypan squash is no exception. Therefore it grows in more and more allotments and vegetable gardens. This plant is relatively easy in cultivation, very tasty and can be used in many ways. Young pattypan fruit not only dazzle with subtle taste, but also with ornamental look. Another variety available in our offer - white pattypan squash "Disco" - allows you to enjoy this unusual vegetable.

This is an early Polish variety with a completely different habit than squash. It is compact, bushy and does not occupy much space at a vegetable bed. Large, palmate leaves with long, coarsely haired petioles shelter blooms growing from its corners. Because of the widely spread, yet shallow root system the plants are sensitive to drought. Pattypan fruit take on form of discus or, as some might say, two plates put together with corrugated edges. They grow up to 30 - 30 cm in diameter. Please note that small and very small fruit with shiny, slightly viscous peel are the best. Older squashes tend to become harder. "Disco" variety produces fruit with creamy white peels, but younger fruit are light green and get paler with age. This variety yields rich, evenly shaped crops.

Pattypan squash fruit that are rich in organic matter are great for preserves and pickles like their close relatives - cucumbers. Young, corrugated discs of pattypan squash "Disco" drown in aromatic, seasoned marinade would constitute a wonderful addition to warm or cold meat plates. Using other kind of marinade will allow you to produce pickled pattypan squashes, similar, yet much more tender tasting than cucumbers. Thin pattypan slices with peel left will make a wonderful, refreshing addition to salads, seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and garlic. If we miss the optimal harvest period for pattypan squashes for any reason, we have other options available. "Disco" pattypans can be filled, roasted and steamed. They fit into meat stews and hearty, vegetarian ratatouilles. Please try fried pattypan squash blooms to get away from the traditional dishes. They taste great covered with pancake batter and fried on a sizzling pan. Fries made from young pattypan squashes are also worth trying out.

Besides offering interesting possibilities in the kitchen there is more to pattypan squashes. They beneficially influence your health. They are low-calorie and contain large amounts of antioxidants, such as beta-carotene and vitamin C, as well as B vitamins and minerals.
