The very hot, red jalapeno pepper (Capsicum annuum) belongs to the hottest, most savoury pepper varieties in the world. Jalapeno displays unique, rich aroma and it owes its hot, extermely savoury taste to the high capsaicine content. The largest amounts of this alcaloid are stored in the seed cores, so you may remove them to milden the hotness of the peppers. The fruit grow medium large, 5-10 cm long, conical and very regular in shape. Initially green, they take on vivid, fiery red colour as they mature. Fresh fruit may be added to dishes or marinated or dried. Jalapeno peppers constitute an important part of Mexican cuisine and may be served in meat dishes, sauces and snacks.
Jalapeno pepper may be grown in pots and containers all year long. On warm and sunny days you may put them outside on a balcony or terrace. This species should be grown in gardens in tunnels. Previously prepared seedlings are transplanted under covers when the risk of spring frosts has passed. It grows best and yields best crops in light, permeable, fertile soils that are rich in nutrients and water. Peppers grown on sunny sites develop more blooms, hence you can expect richer crops.
