"Filderkraut" white head cabbage (Brassica oleracea convar. capitata var. alba) is a late, original variety that develops intriguingly shaped, conical heads consisting of grey-green leaves. They are characterized by high gustatory value. This variety is particularly recommended for pickling, but it also tastes great cooked or raw, in salads. Cabbage is a very nutritional vegetable rich in vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, as well as calcium. Cabbage juice shows medicinal and anti-cancer effects. It cleans blood and skin, detoxifies liver and soothes nerves. Vitamin K that cabbage contains beneficially affects functioning of the brain, improving the focus.

"Filderkraut" cabbage may be grown from seedlings produced under covers or from direct sow to the field. In order to produce the seedlings, seeds need to be sown to pots from mid-February to beginning of April. The hardened seedlings should be transplanted outside mid-April or at the beginning of May in 50 x 50 cm spacings. In case of the cultivation from direct sow to the permanent site, seeds are sown from March to April. Remember to thin the developing seedlings between April and mid-June. Fully developed heads may be harvested in October and November. These plants need sunny sites with heavy, fertile, sufficiently moist soils rich in nutrients (particularly calcium) and humus, preferably enriched with compost or manure.
